When I first picked up a knife, I didn’t realize it would carve out more than just materials—it would shape my passion, my purpose, and eventually, this blog. Welcome to the second installment of Chasing Steel, where I step out from behind the keyboard to share my personal connection to the world of knives and, more importantly, to the man whose craftsmanship inspired it all: Brian Hoffner.
The Spark That Ignited My Passion
My fascination with knives didn’t begin with a dramatic story of survival or a quest for the perfect blade. It started simply—with curiosity. I was intrigued by the artistry, the engineering, and the unspoken bond between a blade and its owner. But it wasn’t until I encountered Hoffner Knives that this casual interest transformed into something deeper.
Meeting Brian Hoffner: More Than Just a Knifemaker
I met Brian Hoffner in 1998 at an annual TTPOA conference in Clear Lake, TX. I was attending training on Active Shooter with ALERRT, and Brian was one of the guest lecturers and instructors. At that time, I knew he was heavily involved in self-defense, but I had no idea he was also a knife maker. Fast forward to 2008—Brian and I had crossed paths several times during my training as a Tactical Paramedic on SWAT, often at TTPOA conferences, trade shows, and even at SHOT Show in Las Vegas. Despite these encounters, we talked, but really didn’t connect until I discovered he was selling his premier knife, “The Hoffner Tactical Folding Knife.“
At that time, I was the manager of Top Brass in Stafford, TX, a military and tactical store where the Hoffner knife was one of our best sellers. Curious and eager to learn more, I called him up and invited him to the store to showcase his product. Wow! I was impressed. I learned a lot about Brian and his company that day. In addition to knives, he also sold tactical covert clothing, provided self-defense training—specifically around the use of his knives—and had several other products such as instructional videos and DVDs.
An interesting note: although Brian’s knives are intended for self-defense, the end product of an attack involves stabbing, slashing, and cutting. Hoffner knives can create some horrific wounds, even death. That’s where I come in. As a Paramedic, I have extensive experience dealing with knife wounds, which adds a unique perspective to our discussions. Our shared experiences have led to some fascinating conversations about the design and effectiveness of his knives from both a tactical and medical standpoint.
Brian and I share a strong connection through our membership in the Texas Tactical Police Officer’s Association (TTPOA), where we’ve both had the opportunity to publish articles that reflect our shared values and expertise. This common ground has fostered a lasting bond, opening the door for us to collaborate and exchange ideas over the years.
Beyond his impressive ethos, Brian is exceptionally generous. He’s donated several of his knives to events I’ve coordinated, supporting causes close to both of our hearts—like the Lone Survivor Foundation, HARO events such as Irreverent Warriors, and various fundraisers benefiting military personnel and first responders. As active members of these communities, these contributions mean a great deal to us.
I’ll never forget the day we first sat down to really get to know each other. Though I already owned a Hoffner knife, Brian gifted me one of his straight blades—a Hoffner Hand Spear—as a token of appreciation for inviting him to the store. That simple gesture marked the beginning of a great friendship. Since then, I’ve proudly considered myself one of his biggest fans.
